Wessex Spines offers comprehensive treatment options for all spinal conditions. Where spinal surgery is required, we use the latest evidence based treatments available adopting minimally invasive techniques that improve postoperative recovery.

We specialise in assessment and diagnosis of spinal complaints with appropriate conservative treatment, planning surgery only when all other options have been exhausted. Comprehensive rehabilitation and therapy programs are included in our care plans.

Mr John Fowler is a full time Spinal Surgeon and works in both the National Health Service and the private sector. He has committed his career to the management of patients with spinal problems. John is former Secretary to the British Association of Spinal Surgeons.

We understand that spinal problems, and particularly surgery to your spine, can be a terrifying thought but we will help you to understand exactly what procedure is necessary and what the recovery period is likely to entail.

This website has been put together with care and attention to provide useful information to help you understand these complex conditions. The site cannot be totally inclusive or comprehensive and should only be used for your education and understanding. It is important that a qualified Medical Practitioner specialising in the appropriate field makes any diagnosis. Please browse the pages to understand the services we offer. More patient information can be obtained from the British Association of Spinal Surgeons.

Mr John Fowler works both for the NHS and privately. He was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgeon in 1992 and worked at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester. In 2009 he moved to Southampton University NHS Trust and is now the senior member of the Spinal Surgery Unit The team provides comprehensive spinal care and is a Tertiary Referral Centre for a large part of Wessex. John is committed to training new and established Spinal Surgeons. He runs a Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery course to teach new techniques to trainees and established Consultants.

Minimally invasive surgery has allowed a much-reduced length of hospitalisation, reduced blood loss and reduced trauma to muscles and upper tissues. Operations that a few years ago required large blood transfusions are now routinely performed without this requirement.
